Health walks

Walkers live longer!

Bolton Council’s health walks scheme is going from strength to strength with more people discovering the delights of Bolton’s parks and countryside.

A recent survey found that 130 people take part in Bolton Health Walks each week.
People’s motivations vary from losing weight to easing arthritis and high blood pressure but many join for the sociable aspect of walking and the chance to get out and see Bolton’s countryside and parks.

“I had been given information on the walk by the Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse following a heart attack,” said one walker, Jeanette Lee: “I was surprised that there were other people with similar problems to mine, who were all determined to do something about their problems”

Another walker, Pat Burrows, needed to find a new way of exercising: “I had to reduce my high blood pressure and lose weight. The walks have helped me to achieve both of these over the summer. I’ve got a lot fitter and met some really nice people.”

The walks are free and led by trained health walkers. They are aimed at people who want to become more active, meet new people and exercise in a social, friendly environment. Walking regularly has many physical, mental and social health benefits.
